The call to action from these complainants was unequivocal: they urged the FTC to launch a full investigation into OpenAI and mandate the integration of stronger safeguards to prevent the reinforcement of delusions. How can a technology designed to assist, so profoundly mislead and psychologically injure its users?

The Critical Void: The Absence of an AI Psychosis Research Lab

Despite the escalating concerns, a crucial piece of the puzzle is conspicuously missing: a dedicated AI psychosis research lab. The concept of an “AI Psychosis Research Lab” offers a compelling potential solution. Envisioned as a fully remote operation, such a lab could develop a vital “side display” for consumer AI chatbots. This display would function as a real-time cognitive compass, illustrating the “relays or directions of mind” and highlighting when a user’s thoughts are being guided “.” By providing “pathways and locations, tied to certain words or phrases,” users could gain extended awareness of AI’s subtle influence.

The implications of such a lab extend far beyond chatbots. Its solutions could be adapted “optionally to social media, video games, certain websites and so forth,” tackling the adverse mental health effects pervasive across digital platforms. The ultimate goal is transparency: to show users “where the mind is going and how to ensure checks on reality,” offering insights from past usage and warnings for future interactions. This is particularly crucial for vulnerable populations, including kids and teens, who might bypass existing age-delineated guardrails.

Expert Validation and the Urgency of Action

The severity of this issue is further underscored by a recent report from Psychiatry Online, dated September 29, 2025, titled “Special Report: AI-Induced Psychosis: A New Frontier in Mental Health.” This report acknowledges the “rapid proliferation of artificial intelligence technologies” and the “escalating crises, including psychosis, suicidality, and even murder-suicide following intense chatbot interactions.” Key factors identified include “Intense use, Lack of reality testing, Missed crisis escalation, Vulnerable populations, Memory feature.” These observations align perfectly with the need for immediate, targeted research and intervention.

The proposed lab’s work, which could commence as early as November 2025, with its architecture reportedly ready, promises to lead the industry. Whether its display is hidden, optional, or mandated as an API, its very existence could generate revenues to fund broader AI ethics initiatives and solidify a commitment to user safety. In the face of AI psychosis, a problem still very much with us, this solution could significantly influence how regulatory bodies like the FTC approach oversight, demonstrating essential care for the vulnerable and establishing a new plinth of digital safety.
