The pricing model also saw adjustment; while the Indigo2 IMPACT R10000 hardware was even more expensive at $138,000, the cost per software seat dropped considerably to $14,000. Furthermore, the hardware itself was more compact and streamlined, enhancing practicality and accessibility compared to its predecessors. These innovations marked a critical step towards making CAD a more viable tool for a broader range of engineering firms.

Democratization and Widespread Adoption

The true democratization of CAD, however, arrived in 1995 with the release of Acer’s Aspire (575LB) and the companion software, SOLIDWORKS. This era heralded a monumental shift by severing the tight coupling between specialized CAD hardware and software. SOLIDWORKS was revolutionary not only for its intuitive interface, allowing users to achieve mastery in a matter of months, but also for its compatibility.

Breaking free from proprietary operating systems, SOLIDWORKS could run on widely adopted platforms like Windows 95 and Linux. This meant project designers could leverage their existing computer infrastructure, circumventing the exorbitant upfront investment in dedicated CAD hardware. Combined with a significantly reduced price of only $4,000 per seat, SOLIDWORKS became massively accessible. Its ease of learning and integration into familiar operating environments propelled it to widespread popularity, profoundly transforming the design landscape.

The impact of SOLIDWORKS’ accessibility is evident in its enduring legacy, maintaining its status as a leading CAD program with a global community exceeding 8 million users. Yet, the history of CAD is one of constant innovation, and the next seismic shift is already upon us: Artificial Intelligence (AI).

AI is rapidly integrating into project design, promising to elevate CAD from a drawing tool to an intelligent co-creation partner.
